Cirurgia para correção de orelhas em abano

Flappy ears are a stigmatizing deformity and that leads to deep emotional traumas and difficulty to socialize, especially on kids.

There is no ideal age to perform the ear correction surgery, but the recommended minimum age is 6 years old, period when the ear is completely developed and in its permanent size. Besides, because it’s a period where the kid starts going to school, a surgery in that phase would avoid the kid to be exposed to bullying, which could lead to psychological problems.

Planning before the surgery and discussing your expectations with the surgeon are the best ways to obtain a satisfactory result.

Remember: Otoplasty, as well as any other plastic surgery, must always be performed in a surgical center, by a plastic surgeon who is a member of the Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society, and with the help of an anesthetist.

The surgery to correct prominent ears, also known as flappy years, can be performed both in children and adults. The otoplasty aims to get the ears closer to the head, restoring the face’s harmony.

During the appointment, the prominence degree and the specific cartilaginous alterations are evaluated, taking into account the patient’s complaints and expectations. The clinical exam defines the goals that are going to be reached with the surgery. The scar is left behind the ear, and it’s almost imperceptible.

In adults, the auricular cartilages present a more important “memory”, and the surgical treatment must be more “intensive”, through cartilage weakening and even resections, to avoid the recurrence after the surgery. In general, the surgery is performed with local anesthesia and sedation, and it lasts from one to two hours. General anesthesia might be recommended in some cases, especially with children.

Patients who are submitted to otoplasty must rest for 2-3 days, keeping their heads up. The bandage that is placed after the surgery can be removed after 1-3 days, and the patient must wear an elastic band over the ears for 2-4 weeks.

Due to the swelling after the surgery, the final result can only be analyzed after it’s completely absorbed, which usually happens after 1 to 2 months. Physical activities can be resumed after 3-4 weeks, but any modalities with injury risks must be avoided for 2 months.
